The Positive Place

Walk through the doors of any Boys & Girls Club and you will likely be greeted by the smiling face of a child eager to share her story. Club members know intimately what the Boys & Girls Club means to them.

For more than 25 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge has been in the forefront of youth development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. Boys & Girls Club actively seeks to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom other youth development agencies fail to reach. The Club is dedicated to ensuring that our community's disadvantaged youth have greater access to quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and positively shape their futures.

Take Stake in Our Children
Preparations for our annual Steak & Stake Dinner are underway! Due to delays experienced as a result of Hurricane Gustav, we have pushed back the date of the event. The fundraiser is now set to take place Tuesday, November 18, 2008. Steak & Stake is an event in which we ask the corporate community to buy tables in support of our mission and goals for the Club: to take a "stake" in the life of a child. Guests will enjoy a delicious steak dinner provided by TJ Ribs and dine alongside our Club members. It is an opportunity for you to see how the Club is working and making a difference in the lives of children. Throughout the summer, our Club members paint tiles which will be given to the 600 guests as a token of our appreciation. If you are interested in buying a table or becoming an event sponsor, please contact Keila Stovall at keila@brclubs.org.

BGC Members Tour the Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness
In preparation for hurricane season, 500 of our Club members took a field trip to the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Club members attended a disaster preparedness class and made family emergency kits. They also learned how to educate their family members on how to prepare for a natural disaster such as a hurricane. So, 500 kids and their families are better prepared for this hurricane season thanks to the Club!

Join the Movement to BE GREAT
A new advertising campaign called BE GREAT has been launched by Boys & Girls Club. This campaign is led by Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington and focuses on strengthening our mission to increase academic success, improve character, and increase healthy lifestyles. "As someone whose life was changed dramatically by a Boys & Girls Club, I can think of no better organization to lead the country in adressing the pressing needs of today's young people," said Washington.

Club alumni such as Bill Clinton, Michael Jordan, Usher, and Muhammad Ali will also help in our quest to provide a safe, supervised, and structured environment during after-school hours and inspire others to BE GREAT. Visit www.be-great.org to find compelling stories about the diverse lives touched by Boys & Girls Clubs. Help us help kids BE GREAT!
