Club Seeks to Hire Choir Director
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge
is seeking to fill a Choir Director’s position on our program staff to prepare
members for our annual Steak & Stake Dinner.
This year, the event will
take place on November 9 at the Baton Rouge RiverCenter. We are looking
for a Choir Director who can come in two days a week afterschool and teach our
Club members selected songs.

Members Outperform Their Peers
The Boys & Girls Club’s fourth and eighth grade members who completed the LEAP exam outperformed their peers at their school. They also outperformed East Baton Rouge Parish Schools and the State of Louisiana. "It’s proven, if you are in the Boys & Girls Club, you are more likely to pass the LEAP,” said Carlos Daniels, Director of Program Operations.

JCPenney Customers Encouraged to "Round-Up" for the Club
From August 4-17, shoppers of the JCPenney at the Mall at Cortana are invited to round-up their purchases to the nearest whole dollar and donate the difference to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge to support quality afterschool programs in their community. Recent studies show that one out of every four children is still unsupervised after school. More parents are seeking the resources to enroll their children in a beneficial afterschool program like the Boys & Girls Club. This partnership between the Club and JCPenney helps provide children in our community access to life-enriching afterschool programs.

KPMG & First Book Give Books to Members
KPMG and First Book joined together to distribute books to Club members
on July 29 at University Terrace Elementary. Members were
excited to
hear Ms. Donna Jolly read them one of the books they could choose from.
KPMG gave snacks and let each member choose their own book, decorate
bookmarks and sign their name inside the cover. For some members, this
was their first book. Thanks to all of our friends at KPMG for choosing
to support the Boys & Girls Club and helping us achieve academic
success.

Club Members Perform Harambee for the Department of Education
Club
members from Forest Heights Academy's Freedom School were invited to
perform Harambee for members of the Department of Education on Friday,
July 23. Everyone in attendance was awake and enthused about the day
after hearing members' motivational song, cheers and chants.

Taco Bell's "Graduate to Go" Tour Stops at LSU
The
Taco Bell Foundation for Teens hosted a Graduate to Go College Camp at
Louisiana State University on July 20-21, where 100 local teens from
local area Boys & Girls Clubs were exposed to the collegiate
experience to encourage high school graduation and continued education. "When it comes to the topic of teen graduation, we cannot afford to ignore the reality that the high school dropout rate is still an increasing issue," said Greg Hamer, local Gulf South Taco Bell franchise owner. "Everyone starts somewhere and it is through real-world experiences like this college camp that young adults are given the opportunity to see what their future can look like with a diploma in hand."

Club Receives Governor's Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant
The Club has recently received a Governor's Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities grant for the 2010-201i fiscal year totaling $40,000. This grant will be used to implement the Club's "Get Real About Violence" program in 13 parishes targeting students in first-fifth grade.

Drama Kids provides remarkable creative drama education for children and
young adults. This summer, Drama Kids International, Inc. taught
elementary, middle and high school Club members the art of acting.
During the last week of camp, July 12-15, members performed what they'd
worked on all summer. High school Club member, Andrew Vessel, received a one-year scholarship to attend classes at Drama Kids. Thank you, Drama Kids, for helping members at the
Club!

Buffy Coleman Performs at the Club
Buffy "Mr. Magic” Coleman visited the Boys & Girls Club's Freedom
School sites on July 9. Coleman attended the 1993 Harlem Globetrotters
training camp and played for the Harlem Wizards. Today, Coleman visits
cities around the country to perform and give an inspirational message
to every audience. On July 8, he told Boys & Girls Club members to
strive for greatness, work hard and never give up. Thank you, Mr.
Coleman, for taking time to tell Club members to BE GREAT!
